from the AFEC President I want to thank the membership for their confidence and
support during the Affiliated Faculty of Emerson College union election. I would like to introduce and welcome the rest of the new leadership.

I hope that we can continue to effectively advocate for
your interests, whether it be through collective bargaining, grievances, or
personal support. We want to hear from you to help serve you better.
Together, we can make Emerson College a better work environment for its
affiliated faculty. In the summer of 2006, the union successfully worked through a formal grievance over the administration’s failure to correctly compensate five members. After a face to face meeting, the Union and the College signed a Memorandum of Understanding that settled the issue. The language of the contract at Article 4.2 was amended to make clear that teachers who have taught exactly 64 credits will be paid at Step 2 wages for their next classes, teachers who have taught 128 credits will be paid at Step 3, and so on. I would like to thank Brian for his tireless efforts to resolve this contractual issue. AAUP representatives Julie Schmid and Pat Shaw also deserve thanks for their guidance. (Here’s the new language of Article 4.2.
The 2006-2007 Wage Table
is also online.) Finally, I would like to thank David Akiba,
who served as union president through 2006, for his leadership during his
term in office and as a member of our negotiating team. David has tirelessly
served our interests since 2001. As a result of his and others’ efforts, we
won a significant pay raise, established a formal grievance procedure, and
got eventual access to health and dental benefits. Most importantly, we
gained a collective voice that must be heard. We must have active and
vocal members for that collective voice to be as effective now as it has
been. We soon will begin negotiating
our new contract with the administration of Sincerely, David Kociemba President, AFEC-AAUP Email: david dot kociemba at gmail dot com |
